DANGEROUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS PREVENT ON ICE OFFICIALS FROM REACHING GFW FOR SAT NIGHT PLAYOFF GAME
In hindsight the fact that the Clarenville Caribous were able to defy the blizzardous winter travel conditions only accounted for part of the required personnel equation in order for a hockey game to go ahead.
The On Ice Officials who also had to travel to GFW from other centres for Saturday night's scheduled Playoff game weighed the safety of "braving" the hazardous weather and decided they could not safely get to GFW. There were no other local officials obtainable - so the League understood from HNL Officiating contact - so the League cancelled the game.
Regrettably, the collective decision-making in this instance was not as timely as perhaps it should have been,as the game was ultimately cancelled barely an hour before game time.In the circumstances the League apologizes to the fans for the lateness of the decision to cancel the game.
The League understands that the Cataracts organization has already publicly informed their fans that any fan who cannot make it to the team's 'soon-to-be' rescheduled remaining home games will be repaid their ticket price; and, if fans are able to make the next Cats home game, a ticket to the game will be substituted for the 'missed' game.
As well, the League publicly acknowledges the "commitmernt to play" by the Caribous team represented in the efforts they made to get to GFW on Sat in very significant winter weather conditions.
The cancellation now results in the "fourth" game of the Finals Series being played in Clarenville this evening at 7 pm, which is the previously scheduled venue and time for what should have been "Game five".
The League and teams now need to finalize a changed finish for the remaining games of the seven game Playoff Schedule. That decision will be finalized today, prior to tonight's game in Clarenville.
It is already definite that games 5 and 7 will be played in GFW. As League Champions the Cataracts are entitled to an additional Home Game under League Rules:To accomplish that now,(after the cancelled 'home' game), two of the remaining three games are required to be played in GFW. Game 6 will be played in Clarenville. The actual days and times for those remaing games will be announced later today.
