Ed Philpott Night on Feb 25th
The Kelly Ford Gander Flyers are extremely pleased to announce on Saturday, February 25th we will honour one of the Flyers all-time greats as we retire the number of Ed Philpott.
Born and raised in Gander, Ed Philpott was a product of Gander's minor hockey system. He played on the Gander Junior Flyers and was called up to the Senior team in 1967-68 at age 16. That year he played left wing on a high scoring line with Leo Kane and centre Jacques Allard. Philpott helped the Flyers to their first Herder Memorial Championship in 1969.
Ed played with the Galt Hornets in 1972-73 and Whitby Mcdonalds in 1974-75 & the Whitby Warriors in 1975-76 while stationed with the RCMP in Ontario.
After returning to the province he played one season with the Labatt BlueCaps helping the team win the Herder and spent his final two seasons of senior hockey back home with the Flyers from 78-80.
During the 78/79 season, Philpott ran away with the scoring title. In just 30 games, he scored 46 goals, added 80 assists (then a league record) for 126 points. The following season saw Philpott win his third Herder. A great way to close out an outstanding career.
Finishing his career as the 16th all-time leading scorer in NL senior hockey, Philpott played 251 games, scored 173 goals, 286 assists for 459 points while serving just 71 pims. His playoff totals were 44 goals, 59 assists, for 103 points, good for 11th overall. In three Allan Cup appearances Philpott scored 7 goals, 4 assists for 11 points.
Ed was inducted into the Newfoundland & Labrador Hockey Hall of Fame in 2000.
Please join us on Feb 25th as we raise #16 to the rafters of the Steele Community Centre and honour Ed Philpott.
